As global energy giants search for the optimal strategy, Shell continues to reshape its priorities. The company is selling its European onshore renewable energy portfolio to TotalEnergies, reinforcing its decision to move away from large-scale expansion of its own power generation capacity.
Instead of building new generating assets, the oil and gas major is focusing on higher-margin businesses, including power trading, energy services, and integrated customer solutions.
Let's recap.
Shell is selling its onshore renewable energy projects in the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands. The transaction represents more than just a redistribution of assets between two of Europe's largest energy companies. It demonstrates that even industry leaders increasingly hold different views on the future of the energy transition.
The deal is expected to close before the end of the year, subject to regulatory approvals. Under the agreement, TotalEnergies will acquire a portfolio with a total capacity of approximately 4 GW, including:
- around 500 MW of solar and wind assets that are already operational or under construction;
- a large pipeline of prospective solar, wind, and energy storage projects.
The divestment fully aligns with Shell's updated strategy, as the company continues to reallocate capital.
Shell is gradually reducing its exposure to capital-intensive renewable generation projects while concentrating on the areas where it holds the strongest competitive advantages:
- electricity trading;
- energy solutions for corporate and retail customers;
- integrated energy operations.
At the same time, the company is redirecting capital toward projects with higher expected returns. Over the past two years, Shell has already reduced investments in several low-carbon initiatives while maintaining funding only for those elements of the energy transition that directly complement its core business.
For TotalEnergies, the acquisition further strengthens its position in Europe's largest liberalized electricity markets. The new assets expand its generation portfolio and fit its long-term strategy of combining:
- renewable power generation;
- energy storage systems;
- electricity supply to end consumers.
As a result, while Shell is reducing its direct presence in electricity generation, TotalEnergies continues to expand its green energy business.
- TotalEnergies continues to aggressively increase its renewable generation capacity.
- Shell is prioritizing profitability, disciplined capital allocation, and stronger shareholder returns, rather than aggressively expanding its renewable energy portfolio.
Interestingly, the agreement follows shortly after British Petroleum announced that it had begun seeking buyers for its business in the UK sector of the North Sea.
At the same time, Shell is not exiting the electricity business altogether. The company still considers the sector strategically important but intends to develop it through electricity trading, power system optimization, and customer-focused energy services rather than by owning large-scale generation assets.
So, what does this mean?
The sale of Shell's European renewable energy portfolio has become one of the largest transactions of its kind in Europe this year. The broader trend is clear: Europe's largest energy corporations continue to reassess their asset portfolios in response to changing market conditions, regulatory developments, and investor expectations.
However, there is no longer a single roadmap for the energy transition. Some companies continue expanding renewable generation capacity, while others prioritize profitability and more efficient capital allocation.
These strategic differences will increasingly determine the competitive positions of Europe's largest energy companies.
So we act wisely and avoid unnecessary risks.
